VI. The Presidential Election Debates
Thus the final step of the new election game is designed to assure that the man or women who assumes the presidency does so with the approval of a majority of the electorate. In the Presidential Election Debates there will be two candidates. On the first Tuesday in December they will have two one-hour debates. The first debate will be on domestic issues, the second on foreign affairs. Preference voting will take place for 24 hours after the second debate. This length of time will give the voter additional opportunity to ponder his or her decision. The person who is awarded the highest number of points will be the president. The other person will be the vice-president.
For the first time since the eighteenth century the vice-president will be chosen because he or she is qualified to be the president. The vice-president will be one of the two most highly regarded political figures in the nation. Selected by the folks back in his or her home state, promoted above all the competition by the people in his or her region, honored by the nation as among the two most worthy challengers to the incumbent president and vice-president, the occupant of the vice-presidency will have been proven worthy of the highest office because he or she will have been selected by the nation as top presidential timber.
A tie in a presidential election is most unlikely. Over one hundred million people will be voting their preference for the two candidates on a scale of 0-9. The odds against these totals being equal are very high. But if this unlikely event occurs, a one-hour tie breaker debate can be held with the voting lines open for three hours afterwards. If a second tie occurs, the election will go to the House of Representatives. If there is no tie or other irregularity, the President of the Senate will officially declare the election results before a joint session of Congress on the second Friday following the Tuesday debates. The inauguration of the new president will take place on January 20 in accord with the 20th Amendment.
